Am I Complicit with the Shame Culture in Medicine?
The Shame In Medicine series touched me deeply. So many of the stories were so similar to experiences I have had, and yet, the voices were also not my own so I could reflect on the content in a different way. After listening to several episodes I not only came to appreciate the pervasive culture of shame in medicine and the institutions which support this, but also the role that each of us play as individuals complicit with the shame status quo. "This is how it was when I was in residency...," "I will never be enough...," or "I can't take time off when I am sick, people depend on me." This led me to write the following Kevin MD blog post after struggling with guilt and shame during employer mandated covid leave: https://www.kevinmd.com/2022/12/lessons-from-employer-mandated-covid-leave.html
