About Our Guest

Zed is a physician, an author, and a storyteller.

As a medical culture critic, she is committed to addressing critical issues such as medical misogyny and racism, bringing to light the often-unspoken challenges within the healthcare system. Her nonfiction book defining medical rape culture is currently in the process of being acquired.

Zed comes from a long line of tenacious Chinese women and loves sharing their stories. Her great-grandmother sacrificed her dignity to save a baby a century ago. Zed shared her story in a viral tweet that has been adapted for an upcoming nonfiction children's book titled Why We Eat Fried Peanuts: A Celebration of Family and Lunar New Year, coming out in January 2025 by becker&mayer! kids. The story of her thieving mother (told in this episode), which also started as a viral tweet last year, is now sweeping the internet again after Cartoonivist Pan Cooke converted it into a comic. Please subscribe to her newsletter to watch for special drawings from Pan dedicated to this Nocturnists episode! Because the more subscribers Zed has, the more likely Michelle Yeoh will be convinced to play her mother in a blockbuster movie!

Watch Zed's story from our live storytelling event, "Taking Care":
